Dialectics of Dance brings together six choreographers working in Whacking, Boogaloo, Breaking, Hip-Hop and House, as well as in performance contexts. Initiated and conceived by Sām Sabor, the project explores how their different bodies of choreographic knowledge can give rise to a shared work without dissolving the distinctiveness of their respective movement languages.
Through a sustained collective process, the six artists develop choreographic material and experiment with forms of shared authorship. The research takes place both in the studio and in public space. Exchanges with choreographers from other regional contexts provide a setting in which to examine different artistic approaches and working conditions.
The research is intended to lead to a production for the stage and urban space. At the same time, Dialectics of Dance considers the place of Hip-Hop and club styles within contemporary dance and the criteria by which their choreographic knowledge is recognised.
